What languages get spoken in your house, and who speaks which to whom?

All of my family speaks Mandarin Chinese to each other, including me. I answer them in Chinese. My brother is the only other family member who speaks English besides myself, and we speak English specifically to each other.

Describe a normal weeknight dinner at your house.

Rice, tomato and egg, fried chicken chunks, stir-fried green beans, and banana milk.

Where does your family food shop, and how far do they drive to do it?

My family shops at either Costco or 88 Market. They drive around 20-30 minutes, sometimes more.

What happens in your house on a Sunday?

We watch football and lounge, eat some favorite dishes at night like lamb skewers.

What sport, instrument or activity did you end up doing — and who decided?

Horseback riding. I picked it because I’ve always loved horses.

What do your parents expect of you, said out loud or not?

They expect someone who’s an all rounder an everything, somebody that they can brag about.

What do you get asked about being Asian American that you are tired of being asked?

“Do you only eat rice?”

What city or neighbourhood did your family first live in when they arrived?

Redwood City, California. We now live in North Andover, Massachusetts.

Is there a story about your family that gets retold?

My brother being the first one to come to America for education.

Who in your family would you most want interviewed properly, and why?

My brother, because he’s seen things in America that I haven’t.
